For the Women in the Industry section in Glass News (January 2026 edition), Melanie Bivans, Glazpart Area Sales Manager for South of England was featured. In this interview, Melanie shares her background and views on Glazpart, her role and the glazing industry.

At Work

How did you get into the industry?

Whilst on maternity leave with my daughter, I’d never used a recruitment agency before. I gave it a go and my first interview was with Glazpart. At the time, I had no idea what fenestration was, let alone trickle vents and plastic injection moulding. But after some extensive googling, I managed to get my head around it and got the job!

What was your first job after school/college?

When I was at college and after I graduated, I worked in a lovely little country pub which had a bar and restaurant and held many events including music nights, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve etc. It was great times, but I worked some very long days and nights.

Brief resume of jobs up to current position?

Whilst working in hospitality, I also worked full time in a contact centre for a renowned bank. I didn’t feel it was for me so I moved into care work, first with elderly and then adults with disabilities. Looking for more sociable hours I decided to move into the hygiene sector and was offered a job in sales/account management and I loved it. After four years, I joined a national builders merchant doing much the same thing, until I joined Glazpart.

Are your skills transferable to any industry?

Yes. This is proven for me, as I’ve done a similar job is three different industries. As long as you’re good with people and do what you say you’re going to do, then you can learn about the products. In my opinion, being honest, helpful and having a good sense of humour are key skills to success.

Career path mapped or opportunities?

I’ve not had any part of my career mapped out. My original thought was to be an actress after gaining a drama school place in London. But decided not to go for a few reasons, so now I just go with the flow and take opportunities as they come. I believe in what’s meant to be, will be.

5/10 years’ time?

I like to think I’ll still be with Glazpart and in the industry. I love working for Glazpart, they are the best company I’ve ever worked for. So, I’ve got no plans to go anywhere – unless I get a massive lottery win.

At Play

All work & no play makes Jill a dull girl. True or False?

100% true! There’s no point in working really hard without some enjoyment. If you spend a lot of time working you’ve got to do the other things in life that make you happy.

Work/life balance?

I’m getting there with this one. It’s been a busy year both in work and familywise. With the big things out of the way, I’m looking forward to some good rest and relaxation after a pre-Christmas break to Lapland with the whole family. Hopefully in 2026 I can start to enjoy more of a work/life balance.

Money/leisure time no object, what would you like to do for yourself & family?

I would travel, just pack up and go wherever I fancied. I got married in Italy and I fell in love with it so I’d like to see more. An American road trip would be a dream as I love the USA. Also, just spending time with my family and to be able to say yes to anything they want. I’d also extend my bag and shoe collection, ha-ha.

At Rest

Away from work – what’s your focus?

Outside of work, family is my focus. My daughter is three going on thirteen and she keeps us on our toes plus with 4 step kids it’s always loud and busy. Also, my family and I love watching football and being big Arsenal fans we enjoy going to the Emirates Stadium, especially as they are going so well in all competitions this season.

What activities help you switch off?

As boring as it sounds, I like to go for a walk or read a book. I try to reduce time on my phone and devices in the evenings and just be with my husband and kids. I like to watch late night murder documentaries which might not help my sleep, but there’s just something about them.

Glazpart is pleased to announce a series of new events for 2026 in partnership with PiGs (People in Glazing Society).

The new event called “Talking Shop with Glazpartners” is  in conjunction with  the five PIGs events across the UK in 2026. The sessions sponsored by Glazpartners, will take place an hour before the PiGs events in the same venues, and will have technical experts from Glazpartners present for informal discussions.

Dean Bradley, Glazpart Sales Director commented “Glazpartners was started two and a half years ago and has grown to sixty five companies across the supply chain. It was set up to encourage greater collaboration between Glazpart and our customers and partners. The five Talking Shop events in 2026 will be the ideal platform for companies to discuss issues with experts who are Technical Glazpartners, in an informal setting.

Glazpart has already had invitations accepted from technical consultants and technical staff from professional bodies such as GGF (Glass and Glazing Federation) and CAB (Council for Aluminium in Building) to take part in the new events, which start at 4pm before all PIGs social events in 2026.

“Talking Shop with Glazpartners” offers companies a chance to discuss the issues that matter most to their business with experts who can help with ideas, information and solutions.

Glazpart and PiGs have confirmed there will be no formal presentations, or sales pitches or marketing materials on display.

Dean Bradley added,  “The feedback from Glazpartners last year indicates that there is an appetite for this type of informal event for companies looking to make more connections, develop stronger relationships and increase their information and technical knowledge.”

Sarah Ball, PiGs organiser, commented on this latest development to the hugely successful PiGs events. “The added value of the Talking Shop events is yet another great reason for attending PiGs social events. We are delighted to partner with Glazpart to make the Talking Shop with Glazpartners, a unique opportunity for companies to meet with industry experts for an informal chat.”

The dates and venues of the PiGs events are spread across the UK throughout the year.

Glazpart was thrilled to hear the recent announcement that the company has been shortlisted as finalists in four different categories at this year’s G-Awards including:

• Customer Care Initiative of the Year
• Promotional Campaign of the Year
• Component Supplier of the Year
• Sustainability Initiative of the Year

The nominations reflect Glazpart’s unprecedented success in 2025 which is extra special as the company celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Dean Bradley, Glazpart Sales Director commented, “It is a landmark year for Glazpart and it’s been made even more special with these four nominations for the prestigious G Awards. The four nominations highlight Glazpart’s work across several different areas of activity.

The Customer Care Initiative is for the progress of the Glazpartners programme which has seen  65 companies from across the glazing supply chain, subscribe to the marketing initiative in just over 2 years. The initiative which is designed to bring closer collaboration with customers has the additional benefit for Glazpartners, with the multi-channel marketing of their companies and brands. This year,  Glazpart has added even more benefits with increased Glazpartners promotion at events as well as new and improved promotional channels, including an annual brochure (Glazpartners Supplement) in digital and print format, new pages on the Glazpart website and creative animated banners and videos for social media.

For the Promotional Campaign of the Year, Glazpart’s FIT Show marketing was recognised. The marketing activity around FIT Show was comprehensive and innovative with, new stand layout and HD lightbox graphics, new product launches and on-stand demonstrations, promotion of Glazpartners and celebration of Glazpart’s 40th anniversary. The activities were promoted consistently over a period of 6 months in the trade media, on social media, on Glazpart’s website and in the newly launched Glazpartners News monthly e-newsletter.

In the Component Supplier of the Year category, Glazpart has shown how investment in people, research and development and state of the art machinery has ensured customers receive on time delivery of high quality products manufactured in England.

Being shortlisted for the Sustainability Initiative of the Year is new territory for Glazpart. Their stand at FIT Show was awarded Gold (the highest standard) award for sustainability of the company’s stand. The award was confirmed by Better Stands, the independent organisation that collaborates across the events and exhibition industry to promote and ensure the use of sustainable materials for reusable stands.

Before the FIT Show, Better Stands identified the sustainable elements of Glazpart’s FIT Show stand that could be re-used after the FIT Show.  The stand was methodically dismantled, then carefully stored, packed and transported back to Glazpart’s HQ in Banbury, with elements ready to use for Glazpart’s next event/exhibitions. Indeed the Glazpart stand has already been re-used at four smaller events.

Now in its 20th anniversary, the G-Awards is the longest standing and most distinguished awards in the glass and glazing sector. The event is dedicated to rewarding innovation and exceptional performance in the UK market. Combining networking, recognition and entertainment, hundreds of professionals in the glass and glazing sector come together each year for the Gala Dinner Event to celebrate the best in the industry.

Dean Bradley summarises, “The G25 awards is the most prestigious in our sector, we are delighted to be nominated and recognised for our work and to be part of such a great event. We very much look forward to the Gala Dinner evening at the end of November and best of luck to all the finalists.”

Glazpart is delighted that award-winning manufacturer Direct Trade (Yorkshire) Ltd is a Glazpartner as their working relationship (now in its 8^th year), continues to grow stronger.

Established in 1998, Direct Trade is one of the UK’s leading trade window, door and conservatory manufacturers.

Based in Doncaster, they operate out of over a 100,000ft facility within which they manufacture PVCu windows and doors, composite doors, conservatory roofs and aluminium products.

Glazpart is delighted to announce that Affordable Window Systems including Timberlook has become a Glazpartner – the initiative set up to; increase customer collaboration, find product solutions and deliver reciprocal marketing benefits.

Affordable Window Systems was founded in 1993 as a family owned business in Blackpool, where the central manufacturing facility still operates along with company offices to deliver customer service, account management, and trade support.

Using their expertise and deep understanding of the market from decades of working in the industry, the family focused initially on their expertise of manufacturing uPVC windows and doors for trade customers. Within a few years,  Affordable Window Systems quickly built a reputation for quality, reliability, and customer-first service. Responding to growing local demand, the company later launched 21st Century Windows, a sister company offering a one-stop shop for installers, which included a fully stocked trade counter. Since its first branch opened in the early 2000s, 21st Century Windows has expanded to five locations across the North West of England — and even a little beyond.

Another sister company, Affordable Aluminium Systems, soon followed, providing aluminium systems to the trade, including the exciting innovation of bifold doors (to name but a few). From its humble beginnings, manufacturing just 50 windows a week, Affordable Windows Group is still a family run business and now operates UK-wide, producing over 3,000 uPVC and aluminium items weekly — a true testament to over three decades of listening to customers, adapting to market trends, and investing in long-term partnerships.

Glazpart is pleased to announce that it has attained Gold (the highest level) award for sustainability of the company’s stand at FIT Show 2025.

The award was confirmed by Better Stands, the organisation that collaborates across the events and exhibition industry to transition to the use of reusable stands.

The Better Stands Framework recognises and commends the use of reusable stands, inspiring change through awareness and engagement. By working with shows and exhibitors towards the use of reusable stands, Better Stands delivers better efficiency, better experience, better safety and better sustainability for all.

Before the FIT Show, Glazpart submitted a “Better Stands Sustainability Report” which identified the sustainable elements of the stand that Glazpart could and would re-use after the recent FIT Show. These elements included two large containers, used for storage, product display, branding and hospitality.

In the report, other reusable parts of the Glazpart stand included lighting, graphics, display stands (glass cabinets), flooring, fascias and furniture.

At the breakdown of the show, Glazpart demonstrated to the Better Stands representative (Stand Approver), how the elements would be re-used. The Glazpart team methodically dismantled the stand, then carefully stored, packed and transported all the component parts safely back to Glazpart’s HQ in Banbury, ready to use for Glazpart’s next event/exhibition.

On achieving the Gold standard, Dean Bradley, Glazpart Sales Director commented, “We are delighted to achieve this award. It is an independent events industry assessment which recognises the Glazpart team’s hard work in ensuring the stand was both built and taken down safely to ensure sustainability. Our modular stand lightbox units, graphics and display cabinets have already been reused at “Manufacturing Solutions Ireland” just one month after FIT Show.”

At FIT Show, Glazpart had one of its best ever exhibitions with four new product launches, promotion of its award-winning Glazpartners customer support programme and celebration of the company’s 40^th anniversary.

On Glazpart’s achievement, Nickie West, FIT Show Event Director commented;

Dean Bradley added, “As well as having a sustainable and reusable stand, our stand design and set up enables us to scale up or down depending on the size of the event. The design and approach not only reduces costs but also means our team spends less time in both assembly and break down. The storage advantage within the containers also involves less vehicles to transport the stand and its contents. Overall we are pleased with this year’s stand but we’re not complacent, we know there’s always room for improvement and will aim to make our event stands even better going forward.”

Glazpart is pleased to announce that it will continue premium sponsorship of this year’s Glazing Summit and will exhibit new products at the event in October.

The Glazing Summit takes place on Thursday 9 October when over 500 professionals from across the glass and glazing industry will come together for the industry’s biggest conference at The Coventry Building Society Arena.

This exclusive event for the window, door and conservatory industry brings together business owners, directors and senior management from across the entire industry for a packed one-day summit and networking reception in the evening. It is the ‘must attend’ event for industry professionals.

The award winning customer support programme has seen 60 organisations across the glazing supply chain subscribe to the initiative which aims for closer collaboration between Glazpart’s customers and it team of experts, to find the best product solutions. In addition, Glazpartners also receive multiple ongoing marketing benefits. At Glazing summit, all Glazpartners will be promoted on HD Graphics and will feature in the Glazpartners’ brochure.

At FIT Show 2025, Glazpart’s forward planning was once again evident with the introduction of the MSBP (Multi-System Bridge Packer).

The MSBP’s biggest feature is its flexibility in application for multiple window and door systems including:

For several years standard bridge packers have become a key design accessory in UPVC systems and provides a flat surface for the use of setting flat packers whilst ensuring the water escape and ventilation routes around the insulated glazed units are maintained.

As well as its great versatility, Glazpart’s MSBP has several key features including:

• Easy clip mechanism to secure into position and remain fixed without the need for silicone on for example mullions.
• Ensures any water ingress into the glazing channel will run below MSBP and out via the window or door drainage system and stops water/moisture build up and freezing in the winter
• Prevents water from contact with the Insulating Glazing Unit (IGU) maintaining a distance between the water and IGU edges
• Easier and cleaner for installation
• Benefits fabricators working with several systems

Designed to fully integrate with the Glazpart range of glazing accessories including products such as flat packers, frame packers and drainage hole covers, the MSBP also has the same functional benefits as Glazpart’s current range of bridge packers.

The new MSBP is another part of Glazpart’s extensive Glazing Accessories range and highlights how Glazpart is a “one stop shop” with glazing product solutions that help window fabricators and installers in the UK and Ireland. Now in its 40th year of trading, Glazpart has become renowned for delivering cost effective solutions for window and door glass spacing, alignment, security and protection.

The introduction of the MSBP also shows Glazpart’s collaborative support for its customers across the glazing supply chain.

For system houses, Glazpart offers design, technical support and supply of fabrication components such as run up blocks, locking and handle wedges as well as cill joiners and end caps.

For fabricators and installers improved alignment is delivered from the widest range of products available with Glazpart’s extensive glazing accessories range of glass setting and location blocks (flat packers). These integrate with Glazpart’s range of packers (including the MSBP) which support the glass whilst preventing IGU damage or even failure.
