Glazpart vacuum foiling featured in Glass News

Tuesday, 24 September 2013

Colour is everywhere and today’s window market is no exception. For evidence, look at any trade journal or even this article.

No matter which sector you are in, or which materials your windows are manufactured from, there is a rising demand for colour finishes. But where is the demand coming from? There are as many answers as colours but colour options are approaching 10 to 15% of the market.

Three key factors in the growth include; Fabricators, in a tight market are targeting market share growth between window construction materials. uPVC fabricators in particular have looked to imitate competitors; here you see for example the rise in dark grey shades (E.g. Anthracite RAL 7016) as both uPVC and timber look to match powder coated metal frames used in social housing and commercial sectors. You also see the rise of embossed foil finishes where uPVC looks to match the painted surface finishes of timber window colours and lighter colour foiled wood grains to imitate premium wood grains such as Irish Oak.

Consumers have also changed, today they are looking to differentiate, increase kerb appeal or add value to properties. They are either replacing first generation double glazing, selecting from a menu of new build colour swatches presented by the marketing teams from house builders or interestingly investing for the first time as a new installation as government figures suggest that around 24% of the UK housing stock is yet to install any double glazing!

Consumers today are less willing to see “cheap” looking plastic components against premium linear foiled profiles. Small components stand out against the foils. With an average customer parting with over £10,000 for a house of new windows or a conservatory, the final aesthetic and finish is becoming increasingly important. The market is aligning with other colour trends. We can see the decline of dark woods (Mahogany / Rose wood) replaced with lighter (Golden Oak / Irish oak). This follows trends elsewhere in for example the domestic furniture market and highlighted in publications such as the Renolit’s colour road1 which reflect and forecast changes in consumer tastes. With over 60 finishes2 used in the window and conservatory markets in solid colours and wood grain’s this presents its own challenges for vacuum foiling companies.

The customers who have the money to spend in the current market will and are paying premium prices to have all the finishing touches closely matched. Albeit with a slightly glossy finish due to the vacuum foiling process. No longer is it acceptable for example to have a tan trickle vent on a golden oak profile, it needs to be foiled or printed to blend in on the frame.

Technology has also moved on, there is less value to be added by replacing existing IGU’s with today’s more efficient glazing and 70mm profiles, compared to the first installations upgrading single glazed windows and the element of a distress purchase as old timber frames degraded more rapidly.

Window components such as cill joiners, end caps, sash horns and colour matched products such as drain-hole covers and trickle vents are affected. On conservatories it is prominent components such finials and caps with matching finishes that add value and convert orders with end users. Try it…. take a Glazpart Irish oak printed trickle vent and your standard colour vent option and show a potential customer and see the reaction… anecdotally even with the price differential (added value) it also increases your potential of converting a sale.

There are however, technical limits to what can be achieved even with these components, so it is crucial to work with an expert vacuum foiling company at the design stage.

Some issues to offer the finishes you want in the long term can be overcome with printing technology but once you have tooled up, it may be too late or too expensive to offer colour foiled or printed options.

Dean Bradley is Sales and Marketing Manager for Glazpart Limited, suppliers of vacuum foiling, aqua printing and plastic spraying services to the window market and is a designer and manufacturer of trickle vents and window system components.

            Glazpart Gladiators – It’s A knockout – well almost !!

            Tuesday, 2 July 2013

Sunday the 9th of June 2013 saw a team from Glazpart gallantly take on other local teams in the famous annual “It’s a knockout” competition held in Banbury.

As you can imagine the team “absolutely smashed it”, but because of some very suspect scoring, possible back hands and blatant cheating from every other team we ended up coming in joint 7th, but as we all know it’s the taking part that counts, unless of course you win.

Indeed, so much fun was had we even made it onto the Banbury council website

            Congratulations to all the team, team sheet is below;

            Andy Lobban
            Edward Lawford

                CNC Upgrades and Improvements

                Monday, 3 June 2013

Banbury-based Hanley Precision Tools, a specialist toolmaking company, has upgraded to the latest CNC wire and die sink technology from Sodi-Tech EDM. Among the many improvements in these state-of-the-art machines, the company reports “a quantum leap” in their programming and set-up features, as well as in their overall performance.

Located side-by-side on the same industrial park, Hanley Precision Tools is closely associated with the Glazpart Group of Companies, with both entities having been founded by owner Ken Hanley. Supplying accessories to the glazing and fenestration industries and the furniture sector, as well as specialised bespoke products to meet specific customer requirements in the medical, automotive, electrical and packaging sectors, the businesses can offer their customers a “cradle to grave” design and manufacturing service.

Glazpart Ltd employs 80 staff at its ISO 9001:2008 certified site, producing millions of mouldings each month. With this in mind, Hanley Precision offers quick and responsive tool making and tool maintenance services.

“We are seeing many customers bringing work back from China, fed up with the logistical challenge of having cash tied up in transit and the poor lead times,” states Glazpart’s Operations Director, Mark O’Mahoney. “Most mould shops cannot afford to operate their own in-house toolroom, which is one of Glazpart’s differentiating benefits. Customers love the fact we have Hanley Precision next door, offering a “one stop shop”.

According to Mr O’Mahoney, the clear requirements in terms of EDM capability are speed, precision and reliability, which is why Hanley Precision Tools chose to rely on Sodick technology. As part of a new investment programme, the latest arrivals from Sod-Tech EDM are an AG600L wire EDW and an AG60L die sink EDM. Both are similar in size to the machines that they replaced, but considerably faster and more efficient than their predecessors. “Although they were installed as recently as July 2012, the toolmakers can already see that these new machines represent a real step change,” he says. “The linear drive technology is excellent, while the improvements in speed and reliability are equally impressive.”

The business has been afforded the opportunity to consolidate and optimise its wire and EDM department as a direct result of improved speed and efficiency of the latest Sodick AG600L and AG60L models.

“Programming times are at least 50-60% faster due to in-built default features on the Sodick machines that help accelerate program generation. This is particularly useful when using the wire machine as it means we can produce wire programs for the path of a complex shape in a greatly reduced time. On the die sink we have found that we no longer need to pre-rough cut cavity forms, making the process much faster, whilst finishing is now more refined. We have System 3R technology on both machines for rapid set-up.”

Hanley Precision manufactures tools from materials that include steel, stainless steel and aluminium, including multi-cavity and hot runner system moulds. Moulded parts are produced in every engineering grade plastic, including rigid PVCs. The company is keen to point out that quantity requirements are one of its differentiating features, and is pleased to handle low volume requirements, even one-off if required. Add to toolmaking and production a full design and prototyping service, and the provision of secondary operations such as assembly, printing, foiling, labelling, special Aqua decoration and packaging, and it’s clear that few others can match the comprehensive range of products and services.

“We have seen a lot of investment here in recent times,” says Mr O’Mahoney. “For instance, we have a fully barcode-controlled manufacturing operation – now nothing moves in the factory without being scanned. This helps us control workflow and manage machine capacity.”

Hanley Precision runs its Sodick machines to the limit, filling in any gaps in mouldmaking and mould servicing with precision batch production work on a subcontract basis, often for customers in aerospace and motorsport – the company is located near to several Formula One teams.

“The machines have made us more efficient; more competitive, while we can now run thinner wire, making us more cost effective without any loss of performance. The automatic wire threading capability is also faster and more reliable, which along with a six-station toolchanger on the die sink, means the machines better support our 24-hour operation.”

“The plastics industry is constantly changing and extremely dynamic. You have to be up to speed with your customers’ requirements,” concludes Mr O’Mahoney. “Speed, flexibility, consistency and quality are what determine success. For instance, we have just produced two tools for an OEM customer, from cradle to grave in four weeks – it simply would not have been possible without the new Sodick machines. Ultimately they help us keep our manufacturing costs low.”

New colour spraying service for Drain hole covers
In addition, Glazpart Ltd are pleased to launch a new colour spraying service where drain hole covers can be colour match paint sprayed from stock. Glazpart are proud to be an approved colour paint sprayer for Kolorbond – the paint for plastic. The spray system is a special coating designed to paint plastics including ABS, polycarbonate, acrylic and polyester powder coatings where the system forms a molecular cross bond with the plastic surface. Thousands of colours are available; we can offer all standard RAL and BS colours and match to most other colour systems. In addition, we have a specialist colour matching service that allows us to match non-standard colours and supplied colour samples. The system is extremely colour stable and resistant to UV and it will hold its colour, without excessive fading. Technical data sheets show that the system does not contain lead, cadmium, zinc, formaldehyde or isocyanates so is kinder to the environment and safer for operators.

Drain hole covers are required for drained or drained and ventilated window systems. These window systems are designed to minimise the amount of water that enter the rebate. The drainage system of the frame ensures the removal of water from the rebate platform.

It is difficult to ensure the removal of all water from the glazing rebates by drainage alone. Water may be trapped, or may be held by surface tension, either as droplets or between opposing surfaces, even though the design should prevent this happening.

Ventilation may be necessary to dry out these areas. This is particularly true of frames with horizontal platforms, or where moisture may collect on the top edge of an glazed unit. The degree of ventilation achieved is not only dependent upon the size of the ventilation holes or slots, but also upon their position and accessibility to prevailing winds. Slots of 20mm x 3mm can be adequate for ventilation in exposed parts of the window, but further ventilation is probably necessary in more protected parts. To prevent wind-driven water being carried into the frame section, all exposed holes and slots should be protected, either by fitting drain hole covers, or by forming the slots in a position in the frame where they are not subject to direct wind and weather.
