Pollutant warning over ‘airtight’ modern homes By Eleanor Bradford BBC Scotland Health Correspondent

      Tuesday, 26 April 2016

People who do not ventilate their homes properly expose themselves to harmful levels of pollutants, according to experts from the Glasgow School of Art.

Follow http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-36134213 to see the video

Specialists at the school’s Mackintosh Environmental Research Unit (MEARU) said modern homes were being built to be airtight.

This causes a build-up of harmful chemicals and moisture if householders do not open windows or vents.

The unit has made a series of recommendations to reduce pollutants.

Prof Tim Sharpe, head of the MEARU, said: “Poor indoor air quality, particularly in bedrooms, is hard for people to detect.

“There are clear links between poor ventilation and ill-health so people need to be aware of the build up of CO2 and other pollutants in their homes and their potential impact on health.”

The MEARU conducted a survey of 200 homes which were constructed to modern, airtight standards. It found that most householders kept trickle vents closed, and bedroom windows closed at night.

Margaret and John Trainer, from East Renfrewshire, were given an instruction manual for their new home which explained how to ventilate it, but they found the document hard going.

“It was too technical,” said Mrs Trainer.

“It was a huge folder and it just went into the drawer and that’s where it stayed. It was designed for someone who was mechanical. It wasn’t any use to me.”

Levels of pollutants can be five times higher indoors than outdoors and when vents and windows are kept closed, the chemicals have nowhere to go.

Common pollutants include carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds from carpets and soft furnishings, formaldehyde in MDF and plywood, and phthalates which are used in plastics.

These various chemicals cause eye and skin irritation, damage the central nervous system and have been linked to cancer.

High levels of moisture encourages growth of dust mites – bad news if you have asthma, hay fever or allergies. It also encourages mould spores in the air which causes lung infections in people with weak immune systems

Experts at the MEARU have been working with the Hanover Housing Association in Scotland, which built Mr and Mrs Trainer’s house.

Kenneth Shepherd, development officer at Hanover Housing Association, said: “Working with Professor Sharpe and his team has been an eye-opener.

“Many of our residents have lived in old, draughty houses and are delighted to have moved into new, well-insulated properties.

“Unfortunately, few of us were aware of the issue of indoor air quality. Going forward, all our residents will be provided with full information on how to monitor the air quality and the best way to keep their new properties ventilated.”

      Simple steps experts recommend include:

      – Keeping trickle vents or windows open when cooking or showering

      – Increasing ventilation when cleaning

      – Open windows at night

      – Dry laundry near an open window

      – Make sure you understand how the ventilation system of your property works

Mr and Mrs Trainer said they now understood the importance of keeping the air circulating in their new home.

“We keep the vents over the windows open all the time now”, said Mrs Trainer.

“We open the windows and don’t put anything over the radiators, and dry laundry outdoors.”

GGF HAILS FENSTERBAU A GREAT BRITISH SUCCESS

        Saturday, 9 April 2016

The Glass and Glazing Federation hailed the UK Pavilion at Fensterbau Frontale (16-19 March) a great success after the GGF and five other British companies co-exhibited at the world’s largest international fenestration exhibition.

Following the show, James Lee, Head of GGF Group Marketing commented, “Fensterbau has seen a much stronger British presence than in previous years. Thanks to our five co-exhibitors, made up of high profile UK companies and GGF Members the whole event proved a great success.”

Matthew Glover, Chairman of The FIT Show who exhibited on the UK Pavilion added, “It was a very productive few days for the FIT Show and we’ll certainly be keen to take part again in 2018.”

The UK Pavilion consisted of six co-exhibitors including the GGF, The FIT Show, Glazpart, RITEC International, Clearview magazine and GQA Qualifications. Each company had their own individual exhibition stands within the UK Pavilion and use of a café/meeting area on the stand.

Following the show, Dean Bradley of Glazpart commented, “We met with potential clients from over 20 countries and we were pleased to launch some new products in frame corner protection at the show. We already potentially see a return on our investment and the UK Pavilion was ideal as it allowed the group of exhibitors to cost effectively work together, increasing our impact and presence at the show.”

The UK Pavilion also staged the British Reception sponsored by Wintech Testing and Certification. Gailord Nepp, Managing Director of Wintech commented, “We really enjoyed Fensterbau and the British Reception which was well attended. We were pleased to sponsor this special event on the UK Pavilion and increase our brand awareness at this international event.”

James Lee concluded, “I have been doing exhibitions for almost 25 years and this one is up there with the best of them. Our stand presence was strong, the visiting audience was large and relevant. Overall it was extremely smooth running and working with the other UK companies made everything much easier. The GGF and all the co-exhibitors will be holding a review meeting in a few weeks when we hope to start planning for Fensterbau 2018.”

Trickle vents… Glazpart are talking “balls”!

            Tuesday, 29 March 2016

Glazpart’s “Balls” to show how you too could learn to love the right trickle vents…ask us why on stand 263 at the FITSHOW 2016.

As many in the window industry are keen to point out. Trickle vents are not hardware or furniture they fall into their own grey area and are seemingly not the most popular product in the market.

But why is this? Feedback from end users ranges from; “we don’t have trickle vents and have massive condensation problems” through to “I hate trickle vents”,” draught coming through these silly vents, but the vents are shut tight” to “a howling gale blows through the ventilators even when fully closed”.

So how has this negative perception been arrived at?

Well the reason has actually been hidden in clear sight! Glazpart can answer the problem if you visit us at the FITSHOW.

You will find out demonstrated by the ”balls” and be able to see clearly why negative feedback is received from end users, window installers, fabricators and system houses and how to address this perception. Glazpart will demonstrate how and why a solution is readily at hand in the form of the innovative and patented trickle vent the Link-Vent from Glazpart.

So, come along and the team will talk “balls” to you, but before you visit see if you can work out the importance of the difference between >2m3/hr and <0.35 m3/hr!

We will explain how and why trickle vents can be perceived as draughty, cold and even whistle………or not!

In addition, we will show our range of high quality trickle vents in over 30 colour matched finishes from Anthracite grey to Wine Red and Irish Oak to Mahogany wood grain finishes.

In addition all Glazpart trickle vents are now independently certified to meet the building regulations with the range being the ONLY manufacturer to hold BBA and NOW LABC registered detail approvals (certified approval for 236 Local Authority Building Control departments in England and Wales)

Glazpart’s “Balls” show how even you can grow to love trickle vents
